Eligibility
US-registered 501(c)3 public charitable organizations, including educational institutions (170(b)(1)(A)(ii)) and government agencies (170(c)(1)). The foundation also accepts proposals for fiscally-sponsored projects. Unsolicited grants are for organizations that are new to the foundation and seeking grant funding. Search the foundation's grants database to see if the organization has already been a grant recipient. If it has received a grant previously, the organization is not eligible to apply.
Eligible Activities
Rather than trying to align with foundation priorities, the foundation encourages you to apply for whichever of your programs or projects has the greatest need.

Only one proposal accepted per organization per grant cycle.
Preferences
The Campbell Foundation has primarily funded work on the environment in the Chesapeake Bay region and in California, but the Foundation is also deeply interested in supporting nonprofit organizations that engage with and serve diverse populations and constituencies, and seeks to dismantle systems that constrain the choices and opportunities of individuals. The Foundation has a particular interest in organizations that are helping to promote racial equity.
Please note that while the Foundation is open to accepting proposals for any geographic area, it has areas of special interest, including the following:
- California, particularly San Francisco, Fresno, Kern, Tulare, and Kings Counties.
- The Chesapeake Bay region, especially Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, and Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset Counties in Maryland.
Additionally, the Unsolicited Grants Program prioritizes organizations that:
- Have been in operation for five or more years
- Have operating budgets between $1 million and $12 million
- Have a minimum of five funders of $5,000 or more
- Have a minimum of five board members
- Match the priorities in one of the following Program Areas:
- Have programming focused on racial equity and/or on Black, Indigenous, and/or other communities of color
- Have leadership that reflects the communities served by your organization
